Love Story Questions
I always look forward to Valentine's day. I know it is sappy and cheesy and the hubs and I don't have a very romantic, lovey dovey type relationship, but I still think the day is pretty special. We have had some doozies, from the time he got me plastic roses to the year we made an offer on our first house, but we usually have a great time and eat some good food.
1. How long have you and your significant other been together?
In October we will have been together for 15 years (half our lives).
2. How did you meet? {What's your "love" story?}
We went to middle school together and he dated a friend of mine during 7th and 8th grade. I actually found a note we had passed back and forth where I told her I would be the flower girl in their wedding. We didn't really get to know each other until our freshman year of high school. We took a class called "Teen Living" together, and he won me over with the many special talents he possesses. We learned to sew boxer shorts and he sewed his to his pants, we learned to cook macaroni and cheese and he caught a pot holder on fire (to this day he still won't take stuff out of the oven), etc. I knew he was a catch :) I actually set him up with a friend of mine during 9th grade but he says now it was just because he was scared to ask me out. We stayed friends over the summer after 9th grade because he worked at the same place as my sister and got to know her, and then in October of 1997 he called me and said, "Do you know who I think is pretty?" and I said, "Who?" and he said, "You." The boy has moves!! He didn't get his driver's license until a month later so we didn't have our first official date until November of 1997 when he was 16 and I was 15. I totally feel like I have raised him sometimes so when I get upset with him I know I have no one to blame!!
3. If married, how long have you been married?
We have been married for 7 years, since May 29th, 2004.
4. If you are married, where did you get married at? Big or small wedding?
We got married at a church in our hometown and had the reception at a country club nearby. We had around 100 people so it was more like a medium sized wedding. It was a wonderful day and although my mother-in-law tried to ruin it (she had been uninvited because she can't stand me and she showed up at the church anyway and tried to cause a scene) it was really one of the happiest days of my life.
5. Do you have any nick-names that you call one another? Do share!
His nickname for me is sweetheart, and I call him sweetie, lovey doodle, or baby cakes.
6. Name 3 things you love most about your honey.
He is my best friend and the one person on earth I can tell anything to without fear of being judged or criticized. He is an AMAZING father and seeing him in this role over the past almost 3 years had made me fall more in love with him. He is probably one of the calmest, most easy going people on the planet. I have really only seen him MAD mad a couple of times, and it takes a whole lot to get him there or get him rattled. He is a nice yin to my yang because I tend to fly off the handle a lot and would act totally irrationally if he weren't there to calm me down.
7. Tell us how he proposed?
When we were 20 he had graduated from NC State and was living and working in Boone while I was in college at Appalachian. For our 5 year anniversary he got together with a bunch of my friends and planned a weekend trip to Oak Island, NC to celebrate. There had been hurricanes the week before so everything was flooded when we got there and we ended up getting there really late after getting lost and skipping dinner. I am like a bear, when I don't eat I get really, really aggressive. We got pizza delivered to our room at like 11:00 that night, and he promised the trip would get better. We got up super early the next morning and went down to the beach to watch the sun rise. I was positive he was going to propose then so I kept putting my hand out but then he said he was ready to go back to our room. No ring. I was not a happy camper and acted pouty the rest of the day. That night we went to dinner at a really cool seafood restaurant right on the water. Again, I thought he was going to propose so all during dinner I was waiting for it but then he paid and we left. No ring. By this time I was ready just to turn around and drive home because he obviously didn't love me and didn't want to marry me. Then as we were driving back to our hotel he pulled off on the side of the road and made me walk down to the beach with him. I thought it was going to be the break up talk but instead he sat down beside me and told me all kinds of sweet things that I have no memory of now and asked me to be his wife. I was so excited and I ran back to the car to see the ring. He is super cheap so I was expecting a tiny ring but he did sooo good and got me exactly the ring I wanted. I called everyone to tell them but they already knew and were so happy for us.
8. Is he a flowers and teddy bear kind of guy for v-day, or strawberries, champagne, and rose petals?
He is more of a dozen donuts and dinner kind of guy. Presents/things are not our love language so I would rather him take me somewhere instead of spending money on a present.
9. Are you a sunset dinner on the beach kind of girl, or pop a movie in and relax on the couch?
These days I am happy just to spend any kind of time with him! I love to travel so I would love to watch the sun set on the beach with him, but we usually do the movie and couch thing.
10. Tell us one thing you'd like to do with your significant one day. If you could do anything? Go anywhere?
I would love for us to be able to travel internationally. He has been all over the world and I know it would mean to lot to him to be able to show me all the places he's seen.
11. Tell us what you plan on doing on this Valentine's Day.
We don't have any plans - probably a quick dinner somewhere unless we can get a babysitter.
12. Are you asking for anything this Valentine's day?
I am not a thing kind of person so all I really want is to spend some time with him.
13. Give us one piece of advice of keeping a relationship strong and full of love.
Laugh together. Try to make the best of whatever situations life hands you and learn to laugh about them. I'm sure people though we were crazy when Averie was a newborn because when she would be having screaming crying fits we would be laughing like maniacs together. It was either laugh at the situation or cry, and we usually always choose to laugh.
14. Show us a picture of what love means to you.
