Baby Led Weaning
I know I messed up when Averie was learning to eat solid food. I was always so terrified of her choking that I didn't give her much texture to experiment with, and now at 3 she will usually only readily eat soft textured foods. She will not eat vegetables in their original form, except cooked broccoli and lettuce, so we still give her baby food. I want to try a different approach with Reid and stumbled on this article tonight about Baby Led Weaning.
I am not a hippie mama (no offense to any hippie mamas out there - it's just not me), I wasn't able to breastfeed and I give my kids baby food in a jar. But this article got me thinking about the practical side of skipping baby food purees. It makes a lot of sense to skip the whole baby food jar step because it only lasts for a couple of months and you have to get them used to purees and then used to solid foods. But this approach has them eating real, safe table food that they feed themselves so they really only have one transition. I waited until last week, when Reid turned 6 months old, to introduce a couple of jarred vegetables. I think I'm going to research this some more and then try it. Does anyone have any advice or experience with this?

One of my best friends, who lives in Charlotte, is doing this with her 7 month-old, and she really likes it. I think she still uses some rice cereal, and she is nursing, but I loved the last time I was there, watching him mouth on bananas and avocados (and push them around his plate). I'm definitely going to try this if we ever decide to have Baby #2, because Wylie, like Averie, loved pureed veggies but won't touch them whole now, and I think it's a texture thing.
